Q :: When should I use 3Q Check-ins?
Folks you manage need to know they can rely on you to check in with them — apart from planning sessions, budget reviews, brainstorms, and other operations meetings — al least once a month, all year long. Be consistent is part of what makes 3Q Check-ins work.
Sometimes, you’ll identify an obstacle or opportunity in a Check-in that needs its own meeting(s). If it’s not on fire, hold it for the end of the Check-in.
Pro Tip: One reason for 3Check-ins is that your contemporaneous notes from successive months will become the outline for your annual performance review with each direct report (and won’t that be nice….). Another reason is, since your people know what you’re going to ask, they can come prepared to tell you what they believe you really need to know … and ask for what they really believe they need to do their work.
